Description:
From Left to Right: Richard K. Sinkler (1944-2007) - son of William Lukens Elkins Sinkler - or possibly Richard's brother, William L. Sinkler, Jr. - Richard would have been about 8 years old when this photograph was taken. People more informed than we may help us to positively identify this child. William Lukens Elkins Sinkler (1919-) Francis Milton Spurling (1896-1958) - sailed for the Sinkler family. The fish was a circa 500 lb. tuna (formerly called "Horse Mackerel" in these waters) - possibly the one described as being harpooned in “Leaves Folded Down” See: “Leaves Folded Down” by Louise E. [Elkins] Sinkler, privately published in a limited edition of 300 copies and a second edition of 500 copies of which the Southwest Harbor Public Library copy is number 228, Haverford House, Wayne, Pa., 1971, pages 109-110. Description:
The fire trucks are – from left to right: 1950 Ford 1943-1947 Ford 1941 Buffalo custom pumper The building shown in this photograph was built by R.M. Norwood in 1917. - Traditions and Records of Southwest Harbor and Somesville, Mount Desert Island, Maine by Mrs. Seth S. Thornton, p. 85 – 1938 It was originally the primary school for Southwest Harbor, located on Main Street on the land that is now the lawn in front of Pemetic High School, now Pemetic Elementary School. It was moved across the street in 1938 to serve as a building to store fire trucks, town equipment and, initially, the school bus. The second floor, where the town office is now located, was used primarily for storage. - 2007 [show more]

Description:
The fire trucks are, from left to right: 1950 Ford 1943-1947 Ford 1941 Buffalo custom pumper Foreground: Hand pumper #609 The hand pumber #609 was built by William Cooper Hunneman (1769-1856) in 1857. William Hunneman, an apprentice to Paul Revere, is best known for the andirons and occasional teakettle marked with his surname. The #609 was sold first to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and named the "Governor Langdon". Purchased in 1879 by Bedford Massachusetts, #609 was renamed "Shawsheen", and became the second engine the town of Bedford owned. Later #609 made it's way to Tremont Maine, and in 1905, the pumper became a part of the new town of Southwest Harbor when it separated from Tremont. Drawn and pumped by hand, this pumper was last known to be used at the Causeway Club in Southwest Harbor, celebrating V-E Day in 1945. Over the remaining years the pumper was stored in many Mount Desert Island locations. Moved from place to place, including the museum in Northeast Harbor, the Seal Cove Auto Museum in Seal Cove, the pumper now resides in Southwest Harbor. In the winter of 2008-09, the Junior Firefighters checked on the pumper to find it's wheels frozen in three inches of ice at the current storage facility. This prompted the kids to start a fundraising campaign to house #609 in a permanent, solar powered, climate controlled building, on the grounds of the Southwest Harbor Fire Station. Two sides of the structure are to be UV protective glass for viewing and enjoyment by future generations. [show more]

Of the 20 or more public libraries in Hancock County, seven are on Mount Desert Island." - Bar Harbor Times, Thursday, May 22, 1947, page 10 - Mrs. Seth Thornton, Corr., Southwest Harbor, Telephone 66. "Librarians Met At Southwest Harbor Thursday The Round Table of Librarians held Thursday at the public library here was attended by 22 librarians and library trustees from out of town in spite of the rainy day, which doubtless kept others at home. Miss Marian Shaw of the State Library at Augusta presided. The morning session opened at 10 o'clock, beginning with the welcome to the town and a sketch of the history of the Southwest Harbor Library by Mrs. Seth Thornton, who described the small beginning 68 years ago to the present comfortable, well equipped and well stocked library. Discussion of problems arising in the work brought out many good ideas and suggestions from Miss Shaw's experience. The subjects were how long to keep current magazines on hand, when to discard books, restrictions as to lending books of doubtful value and Mrs. Chester R. Parker of the Bluehill [sic] Library, gave a demonstration of mending and rebinding books. Lunch was served at the Carpenter Restaurant and the meeting resumed at 2 o'clock. Miss Shaw showed some children's books useful in teaching race relations, several discussions followed and there was a demonstration of story telling. [sic] Tea was served by the trustees of the Southwest Harbor Library. Those attending from out of town were: Miss Marian Shaw of Augusta, Mrs. Harriet V. C. Ogden, Mrs. J. H. Evans, of Bar Harbor, Mrs. Cynthia Stanley, Manset; Edith V. Vaughan, Frances W. Weeks, Gertrude F. Durham, Belfast: Charlotte Norwood, Bernard, Mrs. C. A. Haynes, Miss Marion Wyman, Mrs. J. J. Duffy, Mrs. E. C. Osgood of Ellsworth; Mrs. Chester R. Parker, Mrs. Jerold M. Hinckley, Mrs. Josie Parker, of Bluehill; Mrs. Lester Wentworth of East Bluehill; Mrs. Gerald Butler, Winifred M. Whitten, Gladys S. Thurston of Belfast; Virginia S. Beatty, Edna M. Handy and Carolyn S. ? of Amherst. Those attending from the village were Miss Ruth Lawrence, librarian; Miss Grace M.
